The mass loaded tapered quarter wavelength tube using a Lowther DX2 was built from a high density particle board and sprayed white simply because these materials were left over from a cabinet job. The resulting cabinets have become some of my favorites, especially for listening to jazz with acoustic double bass. I used Martin's correction circuit to even out the driver response and the sound is really remarkable. I would add some additional internal bracing to stiffen up the large panel planes on the next build, and I am going to try the larger Lowther phase plugs as well.
