The Soft Machine by William S. Burroughs ~ The book that inspired the Soft Machine name. This is an adventurous read, somewhat troubling. If you have read Naked Lunch then you will know what I mean. Burroughs uses his body as the metaphor for the machine, and the main theme of the book (as explicitly written in an appendix) concerns how control mechanisms invade the body.

Paperback: 178 pages, Publisher: Grove Press; Reprint edition (September 1992), Language: English, ISBN: 0802133290

Perelandra by C. S. Lewis. This is the second of Lewis's Space Trilogy, and was the inspiration for my composition "Perelandra". Great science fiction.

Review:
The New York Times Mr. Lewis has a genius for making his fantasies livable.
Commonweal Writing of the highest order. Perelandra is, from all standpoints, far superior to other tales of interplanetary adventures.
Los Angeles Times Lewis, perhaps more than any other twentieth-century writer, forced those who listened to him and read his works to come to terms with their own philosophical presuppositions.
